Incredible footage shows the love birds cruising through the air and captures the moment Lesley sees a box with a ring inside.
Heading to the Cotswolds after taking off from Redhill Aerodrome in his 1969 Cessna 150, Lesley had no idea about his grand plans to pop the question with the help of family and friends. As they flew over a field owned by his grandparents near Heathrow, his team of coconspirators spelled out ‘Will you marry me?’ on the ground with each letter drawn in red on a white card.
But it ended up being a little more complicated than Henry, who works in marketing, had planned.
“By the time I got the plane over the right field I was banking and flipping the plane around and doing 90 degree turns [to get it into the right position],” said Henry, who grew up in Lingfield, Surrey. “The Surrey field that my grandparents own, where we had the sign, is in a bottleneck between Heathrow and Farnborough military base.
“Air traffic control were going nuts over the radio, telling me that I only had five minutes to clear the airspace to make way for a pair of fighter jets.”
Henry’s dad, a keen aviator himself, had done a few test flights in the build-up to make sure the red and white sign could be seen from above. He decided they needed to bring binoculars so Lesley could see it.
Because he couldn’t take his hands off the controls, Henry wasn’t able to put the ring on Lesley’s finger himself.
They were joined during the flight by Henry’s dad, who flew alongside them in a separate biplane as Henry planned to film the whole thing on a go pro camera.
